Sales tax

Sales tax is an additional amount of money charged on items that people buy. The total cost of an item is the regular price plus tha sales tax.

A DVD player costs $120 and the sales tax is 6%. What is the total cost of the DVD player?

Step 1: Find the sales tax

6% of $120	=	0.06x120		Write 6% as a decimal
	=	7.2		The sales tax is $7.20

Step 2: Add the sales tax to the regular price.

$7.20 +$120=$127.20

The total cost of the DVD player is $127.20.

What is the total cost of a sweatshirt if the regular price is $45 and the sales tax is 7%

Step 1: Find the sales tax

7% of $45	=	0.07x45		Write 6% as a decimal
	=	3.15		The sales tax is $3.15

Step 2: Add the sales tax to the regular price.

$3.15 +$45=$48.15

The total cost of the sweatshirt is $48.15.
