Area between two shapes

What is the area of the shaded region?

To find the area of a figure with a hole in it, subtract the area of the inner shape from the area of the outer shape.

Area of a square = side · side

Find the side length of the inner square.

side: 1.5 in

Use this number in the formula.

Inner area = side·side=1.5·1.5=2.25

Now find the units. The lengths are measured in inches, so the area is measured in square inches.

The area of the inner square is 2.25 square inches.

Next, find the area of the outer shape.

Find the side length of the outer square.

side: 3 in

Use this number in the formula.

Outer area = side·side=3·3=9

Now find the units. The lengths are measured in inches, so the area is measured in square inches.

The area of the outer square is 9 square inches.

Finally, subtract the inner area from the outer area to find the area of the shaded region.

Shaded area = 9 - 2.25 = 6.75

The area of the shaded region is 6.75 square inches.
